How to organize your closet - once and for all!
Yes, I know that keeping your closet organized can be an exhausting chore.
I go through the same thing while trying to keep my clothes, jewelry, and, of course, my Juliana Heels collection in order to see them all and easily find anything when I need it.
I’ve been through my share of hard times trying to keep things neat inside my closet and now I want to share a few things I’ve learned.
Now, a cluttered closet can leave you feeling disorganized and overwhelmed. There's nothing worse than starting your day by digging through piles of clothing and trying to find something to wear. If you're tired of feeling like you're trapped in a never-ending cycle of chaos, then it's time to implement some organizational strategies. These are simple yet effective ways not to feel like you’re in a war with your own closet every time you want to step out of your house.
Spring is on the way and it’s the perfect excuse to organize your closet!
Here we go:
1 - Sort your Clothing
Before you get started on the process of organizing your closet, you need to carefully go through your clothing.
Begin by taking everything out of your closet and sorting it into piles. I know it sounds pretty hectic but I’ll get better, trust me!
Divide your clothes into piles: items that you wear regularly, items that you haven't worn in a while, and items that you no longer want. You know, that dress you’ve been saving for a special occasion for over a year… Maybe it’s time to let it go.
Once you have sorted your clothing, it's time to move on to the next step.
2 - Hangers! Lots of hangers!
Using the right hangers can make a big difference in how your closet looks and functions.
Invest in high-quality hangers that are all the same type and color. This will create a cohesive look and help you save space.
If you have a lot of heavy coats, consider using sturdy wooden hangers to prevent them from slipping off the hanger and put them away as soon as winter is gone - Spring is almost here, so hopefully, you won’t be needing these coats for a while!
3 - Vertical space: use it!
Seriously, don't forget about it! Especially if you’re short on storage places. It’ll help you a lot!
Use hanging organizers or shelving to take advantage of the space above your clothing rod. This is a great way to store shoes, handbags, and other accessories.
You can also use hooks on the back of your closet door to hang scarves, belts, or jewelry.
4 - Keep your everyday clothes easy to see!
We all have those jeans we can’t stop wearing or a shirt that seems to be tailor-made. Even a jacket or a blazer that we use more than we should - that’s normal!
So my tip now is to organize your clothing items by category and frequency of use! This means grouping similar items together, such as shirts, pants, dresses, etc, and placing the items you wear most frequently together in a shelf or drawer.
5 - Fold or hang your pants?
I believe this is a personal choice! If you choose to hang your pants, use strong hangers with clips or clamps to prevent them from slipping off.
Hang them by the waistband - this will avoid creating unwanted creases or wrinkles. You can also organize them by color or style, such as separating dress pants from jeans and workout leggings from those baggy and comfy ones.
Do you prefer to fold them? All good: just use a drawer or shelf that is specifically designated for pants.
Fold them carefully, making sure the seams line up and the creases are straight. Here you can also separate one drawer for each type of pants, or organize them in sessions inside only one drawer.
6 - And what about the shoes?
Personally, I think that one of the best ways to organize your shoes is by using shoe racks or shelves.
Shoe racks will make it easy to see all of your shoes at once and it’ll also make it easy to grab the pair you want. You can use a shoe rack that stays on the floor or one that hangs on your closet door.
You can also use shelves, which can be built into your closet or added later. They’ll give you more space than racks.
One last tip: Target and IKEA will be your best allies when keeping your closet organized! You’ll find hangers, shelves, and a lot more stuff to keep everything always looking neat.
Do you have any other tips you’d like to share? I’d love to know your thoughts about it!
